HEALTH PROMOTION DAY
Thank you all for coming and making the day such a success. We had many organisations giving out advice and help on a variety subjects. Thanks to you all for your contributions.
Dr James Read gave us a talk on his typical day which was enjoyed by all those that attended.
Mr Pumpkin was on hand to entertain the younger children which by the amount of noise that was coming from the Education Room was a resounding success.
The raffle for the Raleigh bike was won by Mr V. Cocchiarella with ticket number 54.
The Childrens Drawing Competition had some excellent entries which made it difficult for the panel, headed by the Youth Mayor, to pick the winners but they did and the winners have been contacted and their prizes can be picked up from the reception. The winning drawings are on display above the children's play area in the waiting room.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2011
This meeting was held on 19th May when new officers and committee were elected and a revised/updated constitution was unaminously approved.
The business meeting was followed by a fascinating talk by Dr James Read relating a typical day in his role at the surgery. Unfortunately the attendance for the meeting was disappointing but we are delighted to inform you that Dr Read will be repeating his talk on Health Promotion Day - don't miss it this time.
PATIENT REQUESTS
Due to popular request from patients, the practice now rents a room to a Chiropodist (Laura Blake) on a Tuesday morning and a Physiotherapist (John Coppin) on a Wednesday afternoon. The GP Partners do not recommend Laura or John exclusively. They rent a room for patient convenience at the practice.
Fees are £25.00 per half an hour for the Chiropodist and £30.00 for the Physiotherapist.
We also have Colin Sterland who does Tai Chi on a Monday evening. He does this completely free of charge but patients are asked to donate £2.00 to the Friends of St Lawrence per session.
Please ask at reception if you are interested in any of these.
OUR HISTORY
Our Patient Participation Group was set up in 1996 in order to improve and extend the facilities to our patients in partnership with the Practice.
Patients were invited by the Doctors to form a committee to start this group. Subsequently a constitution was agreed and good progress has since been made.
The following officers were elected at our last Annual General Meeting.
Chair: Bob Barden
Secretary: Lucy Toghill
Treasurer: Christine Osborne
The officers are supported by a committee which is elected annually.
The Group now holds Annual Health Promotion days and we have recently worked on a project, ably assisted by students from the Design Department at Northbrook College, to completely re-design the waiting room. This improvement has been funded by monies donated to the PPG and has been of great benefit to all patients. We are all really pleased with the results.
Since its inauguration the Friends have purchased a whole range of equipment, not normally funded by the NHS, to support and improve the work of the surgery. These include:
- Hyfrecator for minor operations
- Liquid nitrogen gun for freezing skin lesions
- Emergency oxygen cylinder for resuscitation [already successfully used]
- Spirometer for measuring lung function in asthmatics and those with chest disease
- New ear syringes with electric pulse control
- TV/Video for patient education e.g. Ante Natal courses
- Baby changing pads
- 24 hour blood pressure monitor
- 3 electrically operated beds for nurses treatment rooms.
If you wish to help at events, join the committee, donate money. etc. please contact our secretary Lucy Toghill (536506) who will be delighted to hear from you.
